Stewart Billie, a Navajo silversmith, combined two traditional techniques in this ring: a rectangular mosaic inlay face featuring hand-cut turquoise, mother of pearl, lapis, and natural stone in clean color-blocked sections, mounted on a tufa cast shank. Tufa casting involves carving a design into soft volcanic tufa stone and pouring molten silver into the mold — the resulting surface retains the organic texture of the carved stone.
