Mediterranean Red Coral Five-Strand Necklace with Repoussé Enhancer by Ella and Lester James, Navajo

Ella and Lester James, Navajo artisans, created this 20-inch five-strand necklace of Mediterranean red coral tube beads strung with 4mm Navajo sterling silver pearls and silver fetish accents, finished with a large repoussé coral and button enhancer. Mediterranean red coral (Corallium rubrum) has been used in Navajo jewelry since the 19th century and is one of the most historically significant organic materials in Southwest silversmithing — prized for its deep red color and smooth luster. Repoussé involves hammering raised relief from the reverse of the silver to create the dimensional enhancer form. Available exclusively through Turquoise Mustang.
