Scrollwork Tufa Cast All-Sterling Silver Cuff by Bennie Bowakaty, Zuni

Bennie Bowakaty, a Zuni silversmith, carved a scrollwork design into volcanic tufa stone molds and poured molten silver to create this all-sterling silver cuff. The tufa casting process preserves the organic surface texture of the carved mold, producing a matte finish distinct from modern investment casting. Scrollwork in Southwestern silversmithing draws on both Spanish colonial and Moorish design influences that entered the region through 18th and 19th century trade routes.
