Tufa Cast Repoussé Blossom Cuff by Stewart Billie, Navajo

Stewart Billie, a Navajo silversmith, combined two demanding techniques in this all-sterling silver cuff: tufa casting — in which molten silver is poured into hand-carved volcanic tufa stone molds — and repoussé — in which raised floral blossom forms are hammered from the reverse of the silver. The two techniques produce contrasting surface qualities that coexist on the same piece: the organic matte texture of the tufa cast and the smooth, sculptural relief of the repoussé blossoms.
