Red Coral and Spiny Oyster Repoussé Cuff by Darryl Becenti, Navajo

Darryl Becenti, a Navajo silversmith, built this wide, ceremonial-scale cuff around a large natural Mediterranean red coral cabochon surrounded by a cluster of teardrop coral stones, each hand-set in raised bezels. Mediterranean red coral (Corallium rubrum) has been used in Navajo silversmithing since the 19th century and is among the most prized organic materials in Southwest jewelry. Repoussé flame and petal forms radiate outward from the stone cluster, and the band is covered in traditional Navajo stampwork with scalloped edges. Cuff size 6.25.
