Its white color comes from calcite, and its black matrix comes from alumite, a manganese oxide mineral. It is not turquoise. It is a genuine, valuable, and beautiful natural stone from a single, limited Nevada source.

The Tonopah-Belmont mine in Nye County, Nevada is the only known source of genuine White Buffalo material. This geological singularity is permanent — there is no equivalent deposit anywhere else in the world. The mine has experienced periods of active production and inactivity over the decades, and high-grade White Buffalo — material with strong black matrix on a dense white ground — represents a fraction of total recovery.

Collectors who follow the stone closely note that truly exceptional specimens have become increasingly difficult to find as the best material from accessible areas of the deposit has been recovered. This is not manufactured scarcity. It is the natural result of mining a limited deposit of genuinely rare material.

How to Evaluate White Buffalo Quality

Matrix density and color. Strong, well-defined black matrix on bright white ground is the quality marker. Sparse matrix or grey, washed-out ground indicates lower-grade material. The contrast should be clean and dramatic.

Accurate identification. Be cautious of sellers describing White Buffalo as turquoise. Accurate identification is a signal of dealer knowledge and integrity. A dealer who gets this wrong may be getting other things wrong too.

Dome height. High-domed cabochons show the matrix pattern with maximum three-dimensional impact. The curvature of a high dome catches light differently at different angles, making the matrix pattern appear to shift and move as the piece moves. Flat stones lack this quality.
